Way back in 2009 I started using the Remix Creative name for my freelance activities. But times have changed. I originally set up Remix because I wanted to run an agency, I wanted to build a brand and a company which would grow from just myself to maybe having employees… one thing changed all that (well in fact three things)… children.
When I became a parent my priorities changed, no longer was it my personal drive to run a growing business large enough to have employees. I have friends who have done the same thing, saw how long their working hours were, nights, weekends, holidays. I didn’t want that for my children, for them to grow up getting snippets of my time or have to go without having a father because he was always working. I changed my outlook, I changed the way I work, I no longer work evenings and weekends, I work to support my family rather than simply for the desire to build a business.
That’s not to say that my love of my job has changed, I still love graphic design and I intend to do it for the foreseeable future. I love working with clients on their projects, often helping them bring their business from a simple idea though to a fully formed business.
I took the decision recently to promote myself solely as a freelance designer rather than as a company. I was often seen as a company much larger than I actually am. My website and brand identity created a false impression and made me look less personal… which is something that often bothered me.
I’m now Nik, the designer… not Remix, the company… and it feels great to be myself again!
